Why cannabis flower is called ‘bud'
Cannabis buds are literally flower buds — dense clusters of pistillate flowers with calyxes, pistils (the orange hairs), and trichomes (the sugary crystals). Growers use ‘bud' interchangeably with ‘flower.' On a plant, ‘cola' refers to the biggest top bud; ‘nug' is a smaller side bud or trimmed piece.
Bud vs nug vs shake
Bud is a whole intact piece. Nug is smaller — either broken off a larger bud or a side/undergrowth bud. Shake is the leftover fragmented flower and trichome dust at the bottom of the bag. Popcorn buds are marble-size loose flower. All smokeable, all the same source.
What good bud looks like
Dense structure (weight without being crumbly), heavy trichome coverage (sugar-frosted appearance), vibrant color (green, purple, orange pistils — no brown), sticky-not-dry texture when you break it apart, and a loud aroma when you sniff up close. Poorly stored bud loses trichome frost, dries out, and starts smelling like hay.
How to break down bud
Grinder is easier and more consistent. Hand-tearing is fine too — pinch the bud, pull it apart along its natural seams, remove any stem. Aim for cornmeal-fine consistency for joints and pipes, coarser for bongs. Very fine grind burns hotter and faster; coarse grind burns cooler and slower.
