What cannabis flower actually is
Female cannabis plants produce dense clusters of pistillate flowers that develop resin-heavy calyxes and trichome-covered leaves. Growers harvest these flowering tops, trim the excess leaf, dry them slowly (7–14 days) and cure them in sealed jars (2–8 weeks). The finished product is what dispensaries sell as flower — sold by weight in grams, eighths, quarters, halves, and ounces.
Indica, sativa, hybrid
Flower is sold under one of three type labels: indica (relaxing, sedating, body-heavy), sativa (uplifting, energetic, cerebral), or hybrid (a mix). In reality, modern cannabis is almost all hybrid — pure indica or sativa is rare. The label is a shorthand for expected effect based on terpene profile more than pure genetics.
Flower weights and pricing
Standard NY dispensary weights: 1 gram ($10–$18), eighth = 3.5 g ($35–$80), quarter = 7 g ($65–$140), half = 14 g ($120–$260), ounce = 28 g ($180–$400). Per-gram price drops as you buy bigger — an ounce of the same strain is usually ~30% cheaper per gram than a single eighth.
How to store cannabis flower
Airtight glass jar, room temperature, out of direct sunlight, with a humidity pack (Boveda 58% or 62%) to maintain proper moisture. Stored well, flower stays fresh 3–6 months. Terpenes are volatile and degrade faster than THC, so aroma fades before potency drops significantly.
