The Product Types, Explained Simply
Flower — the actual dried cannabis plant. Bought in grams (a gram, an eighth = 3.5 g, a quarter = 7 g). You grind it and smoke it. Full experience, fastest onset (seconds to minutes), duration 1–3 hours.
Pre-rolls — flower already rolled into a joint. Zero equipment. Ideal for beginners.
Vapes — a 510 cart (screws onto a battery) or an all-in-one disposable. Discreet, low-odor, easy to overdo — take one small pull and wait a minute.
Edibles — gummies, chocolates, drinks. Slow onset (60–90 min), long duration (4–8 hr), and about 2–3× stronger per mg than smoking. Start at 5 mg.
Concentrates — rosin, hash, live resin. Very high-potency. Not a beginner product.
The Dose Question (This Is the One That Matters)
Almost every bad first-time story starts with the same mistake: redosing too soon — usually on edibles.
Rules of thumb:
- Edibles: 5 mg. Wait 2 hours. Judge from there.
- Pre-rolls: one hit. Wait 5 minutes. Judge from there.
- Vapes: one small pull (1–2 seconds). Wait 5 minutes.
- Flower: same as pre-rolls.
THC potency (%) does not translate 1:1 to how high you'll get — bioavailability, tolerance, food in your stomach, and the entourage effect all matter. Slow is always right.
How to Talk to Your Budtender
Budtenders at licensed dispensaries are trained to translate feelings into products. Don't worry about knowing strain names or terpenes. Tell them:
- Experience level — "first time," "haven't smoked in years," "regular."
- What you want to feel — relaxed, social, creative, focused, sleepy, pain relief.
- Any concerns — anxiety around THC, sensitivity, medications, etc.
- Format preference — smoking, edible, vape.
- Budget — the difference between a $30 pre-roll and a $60 one is real, but the $30 one is usually enough.
If You Get Too High: What to Actually Do
Nobody has ever died from too much cannabis, but "too high" is uncomfortable and worth avoiding. If it happens:
- Sit down. Somewhere quiet, low light.
- Hydrate. Water or sparkling water. Not coffee.
- Eat. Something small and carb-y.
- Black pepper. Sniff or chew a few peppercorns — the terpene beta-caryophyllene can dull the high. (Weird, works.)
- CBD. If you have any on hand, it counteracts THC.
- Wait it out. Peak passes in 30–60 minutes for smoke, 2–3 hours for edibles.
How to Actually Buy: The Steps
- Pick a licensed dispensary. Verify against the OCM licensee map.
- Browse the menu online — most dispensaries publish real-time inventory.
- Bring 21+ ID. Passport, driver's license, or state ID.
- Order in-store or online for delivery / pickup.
- Check the packaging — every legal product has batch numbers and a QR code linking to the COA (lab report).
Storing It at Home
- Cool, dark, dry. Not the fridge. Not a windowsill.
- Airtight container. The original packaging is fine.
- Away from kids and pets. This is non-negotiable — especially edibles.
- Fresh flower stays best for 6–12 months when stored correctly.
