A bong is a water pipe. Flower goes in a bowl, and the smoke travels through water before reaching the mouthpiece. Most designs share the same four parts: a bowl, a downstem, a water chamber, and a mouthpiece or neck.

The water does two simple things — it cools the smoke and catches some particulate. That is why many people describe a bong draw as smoother than a dry pipe. It is a filtration and cooling accessory, not a safety device, and smoking any material carries risk.

Small pieces — roughly 6 to 10 inches — are portable, use less water, and are the easiest to clean. Mid-size pieces around 12 to 16 inches give a cooler draw with more chamber volume. Tall pieces look impressive but are harder to store and clean, and they tip more easily.

Styles come down to the shape of the base and the percolation. Beaker bases are stable and forgiving. Straight tubes clear quickly. Beakers with a simple downstem are the easiest to maintain; heavily percolated designs cool more but hold residue in places a brush cannot reach.

Start with a thick-glass beaker in the 8 to 12 inch range with a removable downstem and a standard bowl size — replacement parts are easy to find and everything comes apart for cleaning. Fill the water just above the downstem slots, not to the neck.

Pack the bowl lightly rather than tightly, and take a smaller draw than you think you need. Keep the piece on a flat, stable surface away from edges, keep it away from children and pets, and never share when you are unwell.

Change the water every session — stale water is the main reason a piece starts to smell. For a deeper clean, isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt, shaken in the chamber and rinsed thoroughly with warm water, handles most residue. Rinse until no alcohol smell remains before using it again.

Soak the bowl and downstem separately, use pipe brushes for the neck, and never pour boiling water into cold glass — thermal shock cracks it. A quick rinse after each use saves the long clean later.
