Why New York Is Educating World Cup Fans About Legal Cannabis

The Tri-State area will host a significant share of 2026 World Cup matches, and New York City is the international gateway for most of them. NYC Tourism + Conventions projects visitor counts in the millions during the tournament window, with overlapping waves around USA matches and knockout rounds.

A meaningful slice of those visitors come from countries where cannabis is legal in some form — Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Uruguay, Thailand, parts of the United States — and an even larger slice from countries where it is not. Both groups need clear, plain-language guidance about what is and isn't allowed here.

The Office of Cannabis Management has prioritized public-facing education about how to identify licensed dispensaries (CAURD and adult-use license decals, the OCM licensee map). The goal is to steer first-time consumers away from illicit storefronts that proliferated in the early years of legalization.

NYC Tourism + Conventions and the Mayor's Office have coordinated multilingual visitor materials covering the basics: 21+ age requirement, no consumption at venues or on stadium property, no cannabis through airport security, no cross-state travel with product.

For licensed New York operators, educated visitors mean fewer enforcement incidents, fewer illicit-market dollars, and a much better first impression of a market that is still maturing. Every visitor who buys from a licensed store instead of a smoke shop pays state and local taxes that fund social-equity programs and community reinvestment.
