Beginner's Guide to Cannabis Edibles

Start low, go slow — how to dose edibles safely as a new consumer.

How cannabis edibles work

When you eat cannabis, THC is absorbed through the digestive system and processed by the liver. The liver converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC — a more potent metabolite that crosses the blood-brain barrier more effectively than smoked THC.

This conversion is why edibles feel stronger and last longer than smoked cannabis. The same 10 mg of THC in an edible will feel substantially more intense than 10 mg inhaled.

How to dose your first edible

New York's standard edible dose is 10 mg THC per serving. For first-time consumers, this is too much. Start with 2.5 mg or 5 mg — half or a quarter of a standard piece — and wait at least 90 minutes before considering more.

If you can't easily divide your edible, look for low-dose products designed for new consumers. Many brands sell 2.5 mg and 5 mg gummies specifically for microdose use.

How long edibles take to kick in

Most edibles take 45 to 90 minutes to onset. The exact timing depends on your metabolism, what you've eaten that day, and the specific product. Some nano-emulsified gummies and beverages onset faster — 15 to 30 minutes.

Never redose during the wait. The number-one reason people have bad edible experiences is assuming the first dose didn't work and taking another — which is then compounded with the first dose 30 minutes later.

How long edibles last

Edible effects typically last 4 to 8 hours, with the peak around 2 to 4 hours after consumption. Residual effects (mild relaxation or a 'cannabis hangover') can last into the next morning at higher doses.

Plan accordingly. Don't take a strong edible if you have to drive, work, or care for anyone in the next 8 hours.

Types of cannabis edibles

Gummies are the most popular and easiest to dose precisely. Chocolates and baked goods can be inconsistent — THC distribution within a brownie isn't always even. Tinctures and oils onset faster than solid edibles.

Cannabis-infused beverages (seltzers, mocktails) using nano-emulsion technology onset in 15–30 minutes and feel closer to drinking alcohol than eating a traditional edible.

What to do if you took too much

An edible overdose isn't life-threatening, but it can be very unpleasant. If you feel anxious or overwhelmed: drink water, find a calm space, distract yourself with music or a show, and remember the feeling will pass.

CBD can reduce THC's intensity for some consumers. Sleep helps. Black peppercorns (sniffed or chewed) and citrus are folk remedies that work for some people.

Best edibles for first-time consumers

Look for 2.5 mg or 5 mg gummies from brands like No Bad Days or To The Moon. Cannabis-infused beverages from Ayrloom are also great starting points — low dose, predictable, and easy to track.

Avoid baked goods and chocolates for your first session — uneven dosing makes it harder to control your experience.
